Week 7 Wrapup

Finally, a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dark and gloomy bottom of the AFC East. The Buffalo Bills managed to pull off the upset against Baltimore, knocking off the Ravens, 19-14. The win wasn’t easy as the Ravens tried to stage a late comeback but the Bills were able to step up and shut down the Baltimore offense when it mattered most. The Bills offense was efficient and took care of the ball, but was forced to settle for 4 FGs from Ryan Lindell and a TD run from Marshawn Lynch (27 carries for 84 yards). WR Lee Evans had a very strong game for Buffalo, pulling in 5 catches for 98 yards to help rookie QB Trent Edwards improve to 2-1 on the season. It was a very impressive win for the Bills, and if the young team can continue to improve they could make a late season push for a wild card spot.

As far as Dolphins fans are concerned, the less said about Sunday’s 49- 28 loss to the 7-0 Patriots, the better. New England raced out to a 42-7 halftime lead behind Tom Brady’s 5 touchdown passes and a kickoff return for a touchdown from Willie Andrews. The Patriots had their way with Miami in every aspect of the game in the first half, moving the ball at will and continually stuffing the Dolphins offense drive after drive. And as bad as the play on the field was, the loss of star RB Ronnie Brown to a knee injury may hurt even more. Brown has been the lone bright spot for Miami this season, and if he is lost for the season it could add fuel to the 0-16 talk across the league.

While the Patriots have to be satisfied with the victory, coach Bill Belichick will no doubt point to the second half performance of the defense, which allowed Miami to run up 21 points without much effort. The Patriots offense continues to throw the ball all over the field at a record setting pace. WRs Randy Moss and Wes Welker had 2 touchdown catches each, while TE Kyle Brady and WR Donte Stallworth added TD catches as well. Moss’ catches were especially amazing, both coming against double coverage on leaping grabs in the end zone.

In yet another disappointing display of football, the Jets took a tough 38-31 loss at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals. Things were looking great for the Jets early as they jumped out to a 20-10 lead at the half, only to self-destruct the rest of the way. It seemed as though anything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Stupid penalties, shanked punts, botched snaps, more stupid penalties all led to the second haf collapse. One bright spot for the Jets was the play of WR Laveraneus Coles who had 8 catches for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. The running game for the Jets, which appeared to breakout last week, was once again dormant. The Jets young secondary had a tough game against one of the NFL’s best passing offenses, and the defensive line allowed 2nd string RB Kenny Watson to rip through them for 130 yards rushing. Of all the Jets losses this year, the latest one may be the most bitter.

Week 7 Preview

Welcome to Week 7 of the 2007 season! We’ve got a full slate of games in the AFC East this week, including a divisional game between the Dolphins and Patriots in Miami. We also have an ugly matchup of disappointing teams with the Jets taking on the Bengals, as well as a possible upset special up in Buffalo where the Bills play the Ravens.

The 1-4 Bills come off their bye week looking to pull off a fairly big upset of the 4-2 Ravens. Old “friend” Willis McGahee makes his return to Orchard Park, and I’m sure the Bills faithful will welcome him back with open arms. The key for the Bills this week will be getting another strong performance from their young defense. The Ravens defense should have no problem with the Bills offense, but if the Bills can force a few turnovers and turn one or two of those directly into points, they may be able to knock off the Ravens. Rookie QB Trent Edwards needs to take care of the ball and not let the ball-hawking defense put points on the scoreboard. Look for RB Marshawn Lynch to get plenty of work as well.

In a game that only a mother could love, the 1-5 Jets play the 1-4 Bengalsin Cincy. You know its a horrible matchup when both teams go into the game thinking “OK, if we lose to these guys then we REALLY must stink”. As bad as this game looks, the individual matchups actually make this game look somewhat bearable. Simply put, neither team has a defense that should give the opponent’s offense any problems, so the points could pile up. Jets QB Chad Pennington needs to be wary of a Bengals defense that gives up plenty of yards but also makes its fair share of interceptions. RB Thomas Jones will look to make it two solid games in a row, while the Jets’ secondary will need to play its best football of the year to slow down the Bengals dual-threat WRs, Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. I dont see either team winning in a cakewalk, so look for a game that comes down to the final minutes.

On paper, the matchup between 6-0 New England and 0-6 Miamilooks to be a laugher. If the game were played on paper, the Pats would win by 35. But this Dolphins team has given the Pats trouble in the past. Usually the Phins defense gives QB Tom Brady fits, but they haven’t been playing their usual brand of football this season. If Jason Taylor can break out of his season-long slump he could make it a long day for Brady and his offensive line. The Dolphins haven’t shown any reason this year to doubt that the Patriots will win this one by a very wide margin.

Breaking Dolphins News

The Miami Dolphins have sent WR Chris Chambers to the San Diego Chargers, just hours before the 4:00 pm NFL trade deadline. Its unclear what Miami is getting in return, but given Chambers’ talent it should be a fairly high draft pick. I’ll post any updates as soon as I hear them.

Around the AFC East

Maybe Joey Porter really does need a hug today. I doubt Levi Jones would be willing to give him one, though.

Are Dolphins fans giving up on the season already? And are they right to do so?

Is there more to the Buffalo Bills’ QB controversy than meets the eye?

A few reasons for Bills fans to not give up on the 2007 season just yet. I won’t link to the column that lists all the reasons they should give up on the season.

Good news for the Cowboys: they executed their defensive game plan to perfection against the Patriots. Bad news: it was an awful, awful game plan.

No word yet on the status of any of the Patriots on the PUP list, or on any of the Pats injured in Sunday’s game. The Pats did say that WR Donte Stallworth was OK after choking on a little popcorn after the game.

Seems the refs missed a play or two in Sunday’s game between the Jets and Eagles. I’m guessing the official was too busy wondering why the Jets were wearing blue and gold to notice the play clock was at zero.

Chad, Chad, he’s our man, if he can’t do it, Kellen can!

Week 6 Wrap

Week 6 has come and gone in the AFC East, and once again we have one team enjoying yet another victory. And, once again, the fans in New York and Miami are left out in the cold.

The Dolphins travelled to Cleveland in hopes of their first win of the season, but instead were sent to 0-6 after a tough 41-31 loss to the Browns. QB Cleo Lemon played a decent enough game, completing 24 passes in 43 attempts for 256 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 2 picks. RB Ronnie Brown was once again the star of the day for Miami, rushing for 101 yards on 19 carries. Brown became just the second Dolphin to rush for over 100 yards in 4 consecutive games, joining Ricky Williams who ran for over 100 yards in 5 straight in 2002. The Phins defense continues to disappoint, and this week they were done in by Browns WR Braylon Edwards who caught 5 passes for 63 yards and 3 touchdowns. Things don’t get any easier for Miami as they host the white-hot Patriots next Sunday.

Up in the Meadowlands, the New York Jets played some throwback football to go with their throwback uniforms, setting offensive football back four decades in a 16-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. RB Thomas Jones broke out of his early season slumber to put up 130 yards on 24 carries, but it wasn’t enough to carry Chad Pennington’s shaky performance. The Jets had a chance to tie the game late but were unable to find the end zone after having a 2nd and 1 from the Eagles 4 late in the 4th quarter. A Thomas Jones run, Chad Pennington sneak and Pennington pass to Laveraneus Coles all failed to get the Jets into the end zone, and the Eagles were able to hold on for the W.

Going into Week 6, the matchup between Dallas and New England was widely heralded as a possible Super Bowl preview. Its hard to dispute that notion after the Patriots laid a 48-27 whooping on the Cowboys. The Pats jumped out to an early 14-0 lead on two Tom Brady touchdown passes, but the Cowboys were able to rally and took a 24-21 lead in the third quarter. But the Pats outscored the Boys 24-6 the rest of the way to complete the blowout. Brady finished the day 31 of 46 for 388 yards and 5 TDs, giving him 21 TD passes on the season with only 2 INTs. WR Wes Welker had a career day, catching 11 passes for 124 yards and 2 TDs. But it wasnt all good news for the Pats as they lost RB Sammy Morris and TE Ben Watson to injuries. While there is no official word on either player, both injuries looked to be fairly serious.
